Some Russian verbs drop the -ва- suffix in the present tense. This rule specifically applies to verbs ending in -давать, -знавать, and -ставать.
To conjugate these verbs, remove the -ва- and add the standard First Conjugation endings. For this group, the present tense endings are always stressed: -ю, -ёшь, -ёт, -ём, -ёте, -ют.
| Pronoun | вставать (to get up) | узнавать (to recognize / find out) |
|---|---|---|
| я | встаю | узнаю |
| ты | встаёшь | узнаёшь |
| он / она / оно | встаёт | узнаёт |
| мы | встаём | узнаём |
| вы | встаёте | узнаёте |
| они | встают | узнают |
Notice how the -ва- disappears entirely when these verbs are used in the present tense:
| When the alarm clock rings, I get up and forget my nightmare. | Когда звонит будильник, я встаю и забываю свой кошмар. |
| Suddenly I realize that this is only a dream. | Внезапно я осознаю, что это только сон. |
| Suddenly they recognize each other. | Внезапно они узнают друг друга. |
This pattern includes verbs like давать (to give) and уставать (to get tired):
| In the morning, coffee gives us energy, and we do not get tired. | Утром кофе даёт нам энергию, и мы не устаём. |
Other verbs with "-вать"
This rule only applies to the -давать, -знавать, and -ставать families. Other verbs that happen to end in -вать do not drop the suffix and conjugate regularly. For example, зевать (to yawn) keeps its "в": я зеваю, ты зеваешь.
| In the afternoon I get tired, yawn, and want to sleep. | Днём я устаю, зеваю и хочу спать. |
