To pinpoint exact locations within larger spaces or groups, Russian uses specific prepositions of position and inclusion.
In this lesson, we will focus on three advanced prepositions:
- среди (among)
- внутри (inside)
- напротив (opposite)
Any noun or pronoun that directly follows these three prepositions must take the Genitive case.
Среди (among)
Use среди when someone or something is surrounded by a group or placed in the middle of multiple objects. It is often followed by a plural noun in the Genitive case.
| The teenager is standing among the adults. | Подросток стоит среди взрослых. |
| The actor hid among the fans. | Актёр спрятался среди поклонников. |
Внутри (inside)
While the basic preposition в (in) can express general location, внутри emphasizes that something is physically inside a specific container, building, or enclosed space.
| What is inside this chest? | Что находится внутри этого сундука? |
| The old portrait is inside the church. | Старый портрет находится внутри церкви. |
Напротив (opposite)
Use напротив to describe objects or people facing each other, or located directly across from one another.
| The chest stands opposite the bed. | Сундук стоит напротив кровати. |
| The portrait hangs opposite the mirror. | Портрет висит напротив зеркала. |
