Preposition of comparison (по сравнению с)

To express "compared to" or "in comparison with," use the compound preposition по сравнению с.

Because this phrase ends with the preposition с (with), the word or phrase that immediately follows it must be in the Instrumental case.

In my opinion, a digital camera is very convenient compared to an analog one.
По-моему, цифровой фотоаппарат очень удобный по сравнению с аналоговым.

Notice how the masculine adjective аналоговый (analog) becomes аналоговым in the Instrumental case.

Compared to film, a digital file does not lose quality.
По сравнению с плёнкой цифровой файл не теряет качество.

Here, the feminine noun плёнка (film) takes the typical Instrumental ending -ой to become плёнкой.

You can use this structure to debate the finer details of photography, such as sharpness (резкость) or processing (обработка).

The sharpness here is low compared to a digital photograph.

Compared to digital processing, developing film is an art.
