Not only... but also (не только ..., но и ...)

Expanding with "Not Only... But Also"

To highlight multiple impressive features, Russian uses the double conjunction не только ..., но и ... (not only... but also...).

Just like in English, this structure connects parallel ideas. The grammar following не только must match what follows но и—for example, linking two adjectives:

Connecting Nouns

You can also link nouns to describe neighborhood amenities or the people who use them. Notice how the connected nouns always share the same grammatical case:

In the garden there is not only a comfortable gazebo, but also a new playground.
В саду есть не только комфортная беседка, но и новая площадка.
The new playground pleases not only the children, but also the residents of the area.
Новая детская площадка радует не только детей, но и жителей района.
