To form the plural present tense of first conjugation (-ать) verbs, drop -ть from the infinitive and add the ending that matches the subject:
| Pronoun | Ending | Example (делать) |
|---|---|---|
| мы (we) | -ем | делаем |
| вы (you) | -ете | делаете |
| они (they) | -ют | делают |
We and You
Use the мы form to talk about "us". Adverbs like часто (often) or всегда (always) typically go immediately before the verb.
| We often listen to music. | Мы часто слушаем музыку. |
The вы form ends in -ете. Remember, вы is used when addressing multiple people or one person politely.
| Do you often read this magazine? | Вы часто читаете этот журнал? |
They and Plural Nouns
For "they," use the pronoun они and the -ют ending.
| They are studying a new language. | Они изучают новый язык. |
Plural nouns (like students or boys) take the same -ют ending as они. You can use the conjunction а (and/but) to contrast their actions with yours.
| The students ask, and we answer. | Студенты спрашивают, а мы отвечаем. |
Notice how the plural noun мальчики (boys) also takes the -ют ending:
| The boys usually play there. | Мальчики обычно играют там. |
To say that a group is not doing something, place не right before the conjugated verb, exactly as in the singular.
| We are not working, but resting. | Мы не работаем, а отдыхаем. |
