Expressing Stance: по отношению к
When discussing social dynamics or how we treat one another, we often express an attitude or feeling "towards" someone using the compound preposition по отношению к.
This preposition acts as a single unit and always requires the target of the attitude to be in the Dative case.
Notice how the targets in these examples (patients, colleagues, students) take the plural Dative endings -ам and -ям:
| Empathy towards patients is important. | Эмпатия по отношению к пациентам — это важно. |
| Aggression towards colleagues breaks trust. | Агрессия по отношению к коллегам ломает доверие. |
| A teacher who shows tolerance towards students deserves respect. | Учитель, который показывает терпимость по отношению к ученикам, заслуживает уважения. |
Adjectives of Attitude
You can also link adjectives directly to по отношению к to describe how a person or institution behaves toward others. Pronouns must also take the Dative case (e.g., мы becomes нам).
| This court is biased towards us. | Этот суд предвзятый по отношению к нам. |
| The director is very friendly and favorable towards the students. | Директор очень доброжелательный и благосклонный по отношению к студентам. |
The same rules apply for singular nouns, which take their standard Dative endings (e.g., собака becomes собаке):
| The neighbor who showed cruelty towards the dog is very dangerous. | Сосед, который показал жестокость по отношению к собаке, очень опасный. |
