Emphasizing comparisons (гораздо / намного)

Emphasizing Comparisons

When you want to say that something is much better, faster, or stronger, you can intensify the comparative form using гораздо or намного.

Both words mean "much" or "a lot" in this context, and they are completely interchangeable. Simply place гораздо or намного directly before the comparative adjective or adverb.

The new processor is much more powerful.
Новый процессор гораздо мощнее.

Comparing Specs and Features

When shopping for electronics or reviewing products, these intensifiers are perfect for emphasizing upgrades, like a more efficient battery (батарея).

Style and Durability

You can use these intensifiers with any comparative form to emphasize aesthetic and physical improvements, such as a device being more stylish (стильнее) or more durable (прочнее).

This glass is much more durable, but the warranty is shorter.
Это стекло гораздо прочнее, но гарантия короче.

You only need to use the intensifier once, even if you are connecting multiple comparative words in the same sentence.

Now the screen is much more durable and better.
Теперь экран гораздо прочнее и лучше.
