Days of the week (в + Accusative)

Use the question word когда (when) to ask what time or day an event takes place.

When are we going to the cinema?
Когда мы идём в кино?

Saying "On" a Day of the Week

To state that something happens on a specific day, use the preposition в with the Accusative case. The ending depends on the day's gender:

  • Masculine and neuter days (inanimate) do not change in the Accusative case.
  • Feminine days (ending in -а) change their ending to -у.

Pronunciation tip: For Tuesday (вторник), the preposition в becomes во (во вторник) so you don't have to pronounce three consonants in a row.

Masculine and Neuter Days

Masculine and neuter days keep their dictionary form:

I work on Monday.
Я работаю в понедельник.
On Tuesday my friends are traveling to the city.
Во вторник мои друзья едут в город.
What are you doing on Sunday?
Что ты делаешь в воскресенье?

Feminine Days

For feminine days, the final -а changes to -у:

On Wednesday we are going to a concert.
В среду мы идём на концерт.
On Friday she is going to an exhibition.
В пятницу она едет на выставку.
People don't work on Saturday.
В субботу люди не работают.
