Compensation (зато)
When evaluating trade-offs, use the conjunction зато (but on the other hand, but at least) to introduce a compensating factor. It connects two clauses where the second idea makes up for a shortcoming mentioned in the first, often highlighting an advantage (преимущество).
| This phone is old, but on the other hand it has one advantage. | |
| We lost money, but on the other hand we got experience. | |
You will frequently use зато when negotiating or deciding if a price or plan suits you. In Russian, "to suit" is expressed with the verbs устраивать (imperfective) and устроить (perfective).
| The quality is much worse, but on the other hand the price suits me. |
| This project is much bigger, but on the other hand it will suit everyone. | |
Contrast (однако)
Use однако (however) to introduce a direct contrast, a limitation, or an unexpected shift. While зато balances the scales with a silver lining, однако often points out a serious disadvantage (недостаток) or a hurdle in a plan.
| This plan has an advantage, however we see a serious disadvantage. | |
It is highly useful when assessing whether a deal is truly profitable (выгодный) or yields a real benefit (выгода).
| The contract seems profitable, however the real benefit is much smaller. | |
Однако can also serve as a pivot toward a compromise when parties are hesitant to agree (соглашаться / согласиться).
| These conditions do not suit us, however we can discuss the details. | |
| They do not want to agree, however we must reach an agreement. | |
