Expressing Concession
To state that something happens despite a certain condition, use the compound conjunction несмотря на то, что (despite the fact that).
| Despite the fact that our farm is small, we get a good harvest. | |
The concessive clause can appear at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. When it appears in the middle, an additional comma is placed before несмотря.
| We started to sow the wheat, despite the fact that the soil is dry. | |
Dealing with Tough Conditions
Farming depends heavily on the weather. A prolonged period without rain is a засуха (drought), which forces farmers to water (поливать) their fields manually.
| Because of the drought, the farmer must water the field. | |
Even with these harsh realities, a successful crop is still possible when using the right methods.
| Despite the fact that there was a drought, the wheat is growing much better. | |
Pests and Plant Varieties
To fight off any unwanted pest (вредитель), agriculturists breed specific crop varieties (сорт).
| Despite the fact that there are many pests, this variety yields a good harvest. | |
Ideally, a good plant variety is highly resistant (устойчивый) to bad conditions, even if it is grown outdoors rather than safely inside a greenhouse (теплица).
| This variety is very resistant, despite the fact that the weather is bad. | |
