From Preposition to Conjunction
You can already blame and thank with a noun: из-за дождя (because of the rain), благодаря брату (thanks to my brother). Add того что and each preposition takes a whole clause instead:
| preposition + noun | conjunction + clause |
|---|---|
| из-за дождя | из-за того что шёл дождь |
| благодаря брату | благодаря тому что брат помог |
Из-за того что introduces an unwelcome cause; благодаря тому что a favourable one. The formal partner you met at the last lesson — в связи с тем, что — is their official-register cousin.
| Because it was raining, we stayed at home. | Из-за того что шёл дождь, мы остались дома. |
Раз — Given That
Spoken Russian has a short, sharp way to reason from a known fact: раз — since, given that. It states something both speakers accept and draws the conclusion:
*Раз ты здесь, помоги мне. — Since you're here, help me. Раз так, я не буду спорить.* — If that's how it is, I won't argue.
Unlike если, which leaves the condition open, раз treats it as settled — that is what makes it feel confident and a little pointed.
| Since you are here, help me. | Раз ты здесь, помоги мне. |
Choosing Your Cause
Из-за того что поезд опоздал, мы пропустили начало. — negative cause. Благодаря тому что все помогали, работа закончилась рано. — favourable cause. Раз всё готово, начинаем. — settled fact, spoken register.
| Thanks to everyone helping, the work finished early. | Благодаря тому что все помогали, работа закончилась рано. |
