Age in the past and future (было, будет)

Age in the Past: Milestones

In Russian, you state someone's current age using the Dative case (for example, мне двадцать лет). To talk about how old someone was in the past, keep the Dative case and add the neuter past-tense verb было before the number.

  • ему тридцать лет (he is thirty years old) → ему было тридцать лет (he was thirty years old)
  • ей двадцать два года (she is twenty-two years old) → ей было двадцать два года (she was twenty-two years old)

This pattern is essential when reflecting on the прошлое (past) and your молодость (youth), such as the age you decided to переехать (move) or жениться (get married).

Age in the Future: Looking Ahead

To say how old someone will be, simply replace было with the future-tense verb будет. The structure remains exactly the same: Dative pronoun or noun + будет + number of years.

  • мне тридцать лет (I am thirty years old) → мне будет тридцать лет (I will be thirty years old)

You will use this often when discussing the будущее (future), like deciding when to start to копить (save up) money, planning for a пенсия (pension), or thinking about старость (old age).

My brother will be thirty years old, and he is already planning his business.
Моему брату будет тридцать лет, и он уже планирует свой бизнес.
