Piling It On with "на-"

In Russian, you can change the flavor of a verb by adding a prefix. One very common pattern uses the prefix на- to express accumulating a large quantity of something through an action.

When you use a verb with this "accumulating" на- prefix, its direct object drops the standard accusative case and takes the Genitive case instead.

For example, taking the base verb купить (to buy) and adding на- gives us накупить (to buy a lot of). Notice how the nouns and adjectives following it take the genitive case.

Gathering and Preparing

This prefix pairs perfectly with chores for organizing community events or large gatherings. You can gather a lot of something (набрать), cook a mountain of food (наготовить), or bake a massive batch of goods (напечь).

Because these verbs inherently mean "a lot of," you don't even need to add quantity words like "много" (a lot)—the prefix and the genitive case do all the heavy lifting.

Slicing Up a Feast

When preparing the buffet table, the verb нарезать (to slice a lot of) follows the exact same rule. Whether you are slicing vegetables, prepping cheese, or just bringing together all the supplies needed for a party, keep your accumulated objects in the genitive case.
