Questions & Answers about Trupa preferă să cânte live oricând.
Why is "să cânte" translated as "to play" instead of "to sing"?
In Romanian, the verb a cânta means both "to sing" with your voice and "to play" an instrument or perform a concert. When talking about a musical group like trupa, it covers the entire musical performance. If you need to be specific, you can say a cânta la chitară (to play the guitar) or a cânta cu vocea (to sing).
Would a Romanian ever use the word "banda" instead of "trupa" for a music band?
No, that would sound like you are talking about a gang of criminals or a strip of tape! Trupă is the correct term for a music band or a theater troupe, while formație is another great synonym you will hear often for a musical group.
Is the English word "live" commonly used in Romanian like this?
Yes, live is a direct borrowing from English that is standard in Romanian for music and broadcasting. It acts as an adverb here and is pronounced exactly as it is in English, completely ignoring Romanian phonetic rules.
Could I use the infinitive here and say "Trupa preferă a cânta" instead?
You could, but it would sound overly formal or literary. By B2 level, you should comfortably use the subjunctive mood with să for verb complements after verbs of preference, desire, or intention, as it sounds much more natural in everyday spoken and written Romanian.
