Romanian uses three simple, invariable words for "his", "her", and "their". They never change form, regardless of the gender or number of the object being owned.
- lui (his)
- ei (her)
- lor (their)
Like other possessives, they are placed directly after the noun, which must have a definite article attached (literally, "the brother his").
His (lui)
Use lui when the owner is male.
| Where is his brother? | Unde este fratele lui? |
| His name is on the ticket. | Numele lui este pe bilet. |
Her (ei)
Use ei when the owner is female. It specifically means "her", so it is often used instead of sa to clarify that the owner is a woman.
| The boy has her number. | Băiatul are numărul ei. |
| Her address is here. | Adresa ei este aici. |
Their (lor)
Use lor when an item belongs to multiple people.
| We understand their problem. | Noi înțelegem problema lor. |
| Their idea is very good. | Ideea lor este foarte bună. |
