Rooms in a House

Kitchen and Bathroom

Let's start our tour with two important rooms: bucătăria (the kitchen) and baia (the bathroom). Both of these are feminine nouns.

Notice how when we say "in the kitchen" (în bucătărie), the definite article -a at the end of the word drops off, reverting to its base form. This happens to most nouns when they follow prepositions like în.

The kitchen is small but very clean.
Bucătăria este mică, dar foarte curată.
Mom is eating in the kitchen.
Mama mănâncă în bucătărie.
The apartment does not have a large bathroom.
Apartamentul nu are o baie mare.

Bedrooms and Living Rooms

The word for the bedroom is dormitorul, and the living room is sufrageria.

Just like with the kitchen, the definite article drops off when you use the preposition în (in). Because dormitorul is a neuter noun with the definite article -ul, it becomes în dormitor. The feminine sufrageria becomes în sufragerie.

The bed and the wardrobe are in the bedroom.
Patul și dulapul sunt în dormitor.
The TV is in the living room.
Televizorul este în sufragerie.
We are drinking coffee in the living room.
Bem cafea în sufragerie.

Hallways and Garages

Moving through the house, you will find holul (the hallway) and garajul (the garage). These are also neuter nouns that lose their -ul ending when following a preposition.

The dog waits in the hallway.
Câinele așteaptă în hol.
The bathroom is here, and the garage is there.
Baia este aici și garajul este acolo.
The car is not in the garage.
Mașina nu este în garaj.

Outside Spaces

Finally, let's step outside to grădina (the garden) and balconul (the balcony).

While you are "in" the garden (în grădină), Romanian uses the preposition pe (on) to say that you are out on the balcony (pe balcon).

I see a beautiful flower in the garden.
Văd o floare frumoasă în grădină.
The cat sleeps on the balcony.
Pisica doarme pe balcon.
I am going out on the balcony now.
Ies pe balcon acum.
