Clarifying Reciprocal Actions with "Între"
To emphasize that an action happens mutually within a group, Romanian adds the preposition între (between/among) followed by a stressed plural pronoun.
Use între noi (among ourselves) or între voi (among yourselves) for "us" and "you all":
| If we argue among ourselves, we will lose the competition. | Dacă ne certăm între noi, o să pierdem concursul. |
| John, did you make a pact among yourselves? | Ioane, ați făcut un pact între voi? |
For third parties, match the pronoun to the gender of the group. Use între ei for masculine or mixed groups, and între ele for entirely feminine groups:
| The contestant allied himself with Radu, and now they are discussing among themselves. | Concurentul s-a aliat cu Radu, iar acum discută între ei. |
| Maria and Elena plotted among themselves until the voting started. | Maria și Elena au complotat între ele până când a început votul. |
