Optative expressions (măcar să)

Introducing "Măcar să"

You already know that the subjunctive mood, triggered by the word să, is used for wishes, possibilities, and subjective statements. By pairing it with the adverb măcar (at least), you can express a strong wish, a desperate hope, or a minimum acceptable outcome.

If only we find a spark of hope in this disaster.
Măcar să găsim o scânteie de speranță în acest dezastru.

When you use măcar să, you are essentially saying "if only..." or "at least let... happen." It signals that while the ideal scenario might be out of reach, you are holding out hope for this specific minimum result.

Not having a fire, at least let a spark appear!
Neavând foc, măcar să apară o scânteie!
Sometimes she has a fever; at least let the pain improve.
Uneori are febră; măcar să se amelioreze durerea.

Desperate Hopes and "If Only"

Because it focuses on what is barely acceptable or deeply wished for in a tough spot, măcar să is frequently used to express a desperate plea for things to improve or a desire for just one silver lining.

If only the storm would calm down by tomorrow!
Măcar să se domolească furtuna până mâine!
The economy is decreasing rapidly; if only the prices stabilize.
Economia scade rapid; măcar să se stabilizeze prețurile.
We need him, if only we get his forgiveness.
Avem nevoie de el, măcar să obținem iertarea lui.

The Negative Form

If your desperate wish is for something not to happen, simply place the negative word nu directly after să, just as you would with any other subjunctive verb.

At least let's not miss the opportunity.
Măcar să nu ratăm oportunitatea.
