Learning to count is an essential step in any language. In this lesson, we will focus on the foundational cardinal numbers from one to ten.
To state a basic quantity, simply place the number directly before the noun.
Numbers 1 to 5
Here are the first five numbers in Romanian.
| Number | Romanian |
|---|---|
| 1 | unu |
| 2 | doi |
| 3 | trei |
| 4 | patru |
| 5 | cinci |
When identifying a number in a sequence or as a label, use unu. For counting masculine objects, use doi. The numbers three, four, and five look the same no matter what noun follows them.
| The room is number one. | Camera este numărul unu. |
| I have two brothers. | Eu am doi frați. |
| Three friends eat here. | Trei prieteni mănâncă aici. |
| The woman has four children. | Femeia are patru copii. |
| Five trees are in the park. | Cinci copaci sunt în parc. |
Numbers 6 to 10
Here are the numbers from six to ten.
| Number | Romanian |
|---|---|
| 6 | șase |
| 7 | șapte |
| 8 | opt |
| 9 | nouă |
| 10 | zece |
Just like before, these numbers are simply placed in front of the noun to show how many there are.
| You read six books. | Tu citești șase cărți. |
| He writes seven messages. | El scrie șapte mesaje. |
| Eight women work there. | Opt femei lucrează acolo. |
| Nine museums are old. | Nouă muzee sunt vechi. |
| You have ten pencils. | Voi aveți zece creioane. |
