The First Six Months
In Romanian, the names of the months are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence. To say that an event happens in a specific month, use the preposition în. Let's look at January (ianuarie).
| The year begins in January. | Anul începe în ianuarie. |
You will also frequently hear Romanians add the word luna (the month) before the name of the month. For example, în ianuarie and în luna ianuarie mean the exact same thing.
| My project begins in the month of January. | Proiectul meu începe în luna ianuarie. |
Here is how you talk about events in February (februarie):
| Is your exam in February? | Examenul tău este în februarie? |
Spring and Early Summer
The months of early spring are martie (March) and aprilie (April). Notice how they are used seamlessly with both în and în luna.
| Their vacation is in the month of March. | Vacanța lor este în luna martie. |
| We visit the city in April. | Vizităm orașul în aprilie. |
Finally, as spring turns to summer, you can plan your events in mai (May) and iunie (June).
| What are you doing in May? | Ce faceți în mai? |
| School ends in June. | Școala se termină în iunie. |
