Open Possibilities with "Ori-"
To express unlimited options, Romanian uses indefinite pronouns and adverbs starting with the prefix ori-. They correspond to English words starting with "any-" and are formed by attaching ori- to basic question words:
| Question Word | Indefinite Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ce (what) | orice | anything / any |
| unde (where) | oriunde | anywhere |
| când (when) | oricând | anytime |
| cine (who) | oricine | anyone |
| cum (how) | oricum | anyway / anyhow |
Doing Anything, Anywhere, Anytime
These words behave similarly to their English counterparts:
| I have the freedom to do anything. | Am libertatea să fac orice. |
| We want to travel anywhere. | Vrem să călătorim oriunde. |
| You can visit this destination anytime. | Poți să vizitezi această destinație oricând. |
Anyone and Anyway
Oricine means "anyone," and oricum means "anyway" or "in any case." Note that orice can also function as an adjective meaning "any" (as in orice destinație - "any destination").
| Anyone can change the destination of the adventure. | Oricine poate să schimbe destinația aventurii. |
| Anyway, we cross the border today. | Oricum, noi trecem granița astăzi. |
| Anyway, any destination is good. | Oricum, orice destinație este bună. |
No Limits
You can easily combine these words in the same sentence:
| I have the freedom to do anything, anytime. | Am libertatea să fac orice, oricând. |
| The adventure can begin anywhere and with anyone. | Aventura poate începe oriunde și cu oricine. |
