Feminine definite articles (-a, -ua)

Feminine Definite Articles (-a)

In Romanian, the word "the" attaches to the end of feminine nouns. Most feminine singular nouns end in -ă or -e. To make them definite:

  • Replace -ă with -a (fată → fata, casă → casa).
  • Replace -e with -ea (carte → cartea) or -a (femeie → femeia).

Let's use these with este (is) to describe where things are:

The woman is here.
Femeia este aici.
The girl is there.
Fata este acolo.
The book is there.
Cartea este acolo.

The "-ua" Ending

For feminine nouns that already end in -ea, like cafea (coffee) or canapea (sofa), add the suffix -ua to make them definite.

  • cafea → cafeaua (the coffee)
  • canapea → canapeaua (the sofa)
The coffee is here.
Cafeaua este aici.
The sofa is there.
Canapeaua este acolo.

Combining Subjects

When linking two nouns with și (and), remember to switch the verb from este (is) to sunt (are). You can mix and match feminine, masculine, and neuter nouns!

The woman and the girl are here.
Femeia și fata sunt aici.
The water and the coffee are here.
Apa și cafeaua sunt aici.
The dog and the cat are here.
Câinele și pisica sunt aici.
