Navigating Your Devices
Modern life requires modern vocabulary. Many of the words you will use for technology in Romanian are neuter nouns. In the singular, they behave just like masculine nouns, taking the suffix -ul to mean "the" (such as ecranul for "the screen" or calculatorul for "the computer").
| I do not see the screen well. | Nu văd bine ecranul. |
| The computer is on the desk. | Calculatorul este pe birou. |
Feminine tech words, like baterie (battery) and aplicație (application), take the standard feminine definite article -a at the end of the word.
| I must buy a battery. | Trebuie să cumpăr o baterie. |
| I cannot find the application on the phone. | Nu pot să găsesc aplicația pe telefon. |
This and That
When pointing out specific devices, you will use demonstrative adjectives before the noun. Because neuter nouns act like masculine nouns in the singular, they use the masculine forms acest (this) and acel (that).
| This screen is very big. | Acest ecran este foarte mare. |
| I want that computer. | Vreau acel calculator. |
For feminine nouns, use această (this) and acea (that).
| This battery is new. | Această baterie este nouă. |
Connecting, Charging, and Downloading
When talking about the internet or applications, you will often need action words. Notice how the verbs for "to charge" (a încărca) and "to download" (a descărca) share a common root.
| I must charge the battery today. | Trebuie să încarc bateria astăzi. |
| He is downloading the application quickly. | El descarcă aplicația repede. |
Finally, no tech lesson is complete without checking your signal.
| The internet is not good there. | Internetul nu este bun acolo. |
| The connection is not good. | Conexiunea nu este bună. |
