I can, you can
A putea means can, to be able to — and, in a question, may. Its present tense:
| a putea | |
|---|---|
| eu | pot |
| tu | poți |
| el, ea | poate |
| noi | putem |
| voi | puteți |
| ei, ele | pot |
The verb after it stays in its dictionary form — no să, no ending:
| Can I go home? | Pot merge acasă? |
| Can you come tomorrow? | Poți veni mâine? |
| I can't sleep. | Nu pot dormi. |
Or with să
You can also use să and the subjunctive you have just learned, exactly as after vreau. Both mean the same; the short form is a little more common in speech.
| May I leave now? | Pot să plec acum? |
| We can go to the market. | Putem să mergem la piață. |
Poate is both he / she can and the adverb maybe: el poate citi (he can read), but poate citește (maybe he is reading).
