Approximations with numbers (vreo)

Estimating Quantities with "Vreo"

Whether you are counting the crowd at a busy street fair or tallying up supplies, exact numbers aren't always possible. To say "about" or "approximately", Romanian uses the word vreo.

Simply place vreo directly before the number. When used this way as an approximation before numbers (from two upwards), it is invariable—meaning its form does not change, regardless of the noun's gender.

The artisan estimates that there are about twenty passersby.
Artizanul estimează că sunt vreo douăzeci de trecători.
About ten artisans sell traditional products at the fair.
Vreo zece artizani vând produse tradiționale la târg.
The passerby bought about three portions of food.
Trecătorul a cumpărat vreo trei porții de mâncare.

Calculating and Checking Stock

When preparing for a fair, you will often need to calculate the total (totalul) or figure out if a certain quantity (cantitatea) of goods is sufficient (suficient) or insufficient (insuficient).

You can seamlessly combine these estimating verbs and adjectives with vreo to discuss your stock (stocul).

We estimated the total at about five hundred euros.
Am estimat totalul la vreo cinci sute de euro.
The quantity of water is sufficient for about forty volunteers.
Cantitatea de apă este suficientă pentru vreo patruzeci de voluntari.
We have about fifty books in stock, which is insufficient.
Avem vreo cincizeci de cărți în stoc, ceea ce este insuficient.
