The verb chooses the preposition
Some verbs never meet an infinitive without their own preposition in between:
| verb | preposition | example |
|---|---|---|
| aconselhar | a | Aconselho-te a descansar. |
| proibir | de | Proibiu-o de fumar. |
| insistir | em | Insiste em pagar. |
| The doctor forbade him to smoke. | O médico proibiu-o de fumar. |
The preposition belongs to the VERB, not to the meaning — memorise them as a unit: aconselhar a, proibir de, insistir em, the way you already do with gostar de and precisar de.
