Unless (a não ser que, a menos que)

To say "unless" in Portuguese, you can use these conjunctions interchangeably:

  • a não ser que
  • a menos que

Because they introduce a condition or exception, both expressions always trigger the present subjunctive in the following verb.

A não ser que

I cannot see anything unless the telescope is here.
Não consigo ver nada a não ser que o telescópio esteja aqui.

Notice how the verb estar becomes esteja (present subjunctive) right after the conjunction.

You do not see the comet unless you focus the lens.
Não vês o cometa a não ser que foques a lente.
The star is not sharp unless you clean the lens.
A estrela não está nítida a não ser que limpes a lente.

A menos que

A menos que is just as common, means the exact same thing, and follows the same grammatical rule.

You cannot see the constellation unless you use the telescope.
Não consegues ver a constelação a menos que uses o telescópio.
The image of the galaxy is not sharp unless the sky is clear.
A imagem da galáxia não está nítida a menos que o céu esteja limpo.
We cannot see the comet unless the night is very dark.
Não conseguimos ver o cometa a menos que a noite esteja muito escura.
