Starting New Activities
To say you are starting to do something, use the conjugated verb começar (to start) followed by the preposition a and the infinitive of the action verb.
| We are starting to attend the course today. | Nós começamos a frequentar o curso hoje. |
| They are starting to practice the piano now. | Eles começam a praticar piano agora. |
Keeping It Up
Just like começar, the verb continuar (to continue) requires the preposition a when followed by another verb in the infinitive.
| The student continues attending the English course. | A aluna continua a frequentar o curso de inglês. |
| I continue practicing painting every day. | Eu continuo a praticar pintura todos os dias. |
Don't Give Up!
Learning a new language or practicing an art form can be challenging. When talking about the learning process, you might need to encourage someone not to give up (desistir) and remind them of the progress (o progresso) they are making.
| The language is difficult, but you must not give up. | A língua é difícil, mas não deves desistir. |
| He is making a lot of progress with the instrument. | Ele está a fazer muitos progressos com o instrumento. |
