When organizing charity campaigns or engaging in social activism, you will often need to explain the goal behind your actions. In English, you might say "in order to" or simply "to" do something.
Purpose Clauses with "Para"
In Portuguese, you express the purpose of an action using the preposition para followed directly by a verb in its infinitive (unconjugated) form. The main action of the sentence uses a conjugated verb, while the goal uses the infinitive.
| We are going to create the campaign to help the city. | Nós vamos criar a campanha para ajudar a cidade. |
| The volunteer is going to collect the clothes to donate. | O voluntário vai recolher a roupa para doar. |
Fighting for a Cause
This para + infinitive structure is essential when discussing community outreach, protecting nature, or fighting for rights.
| We have to fight to achieve the rights. | Nós temos de lutar para conseguir os direitos. |
You can also explain what the purpose of an action is not simply by making the main clause negative. The purpose clause introduced by para remains unchanged.
| She does not do it to protect nature. | Ela não o faz para proteger a natureza. |
| We are going to work together to save the animals. | Nós vamos trabalhar juntos para salvar os animais. |
