Probability adverbs (provavelmente)

Plot Predictions with Provavelmente and Possivelmente

When watching a popular soap opera (a novela), half the fun is guessing what happens next in the plot (a trama). To share your theories, you can use the adverbs provavelmente (probably) and possivelmente (possibly).

Even though you are expressing a guess, these specific adverbs are always followed by verbs in the indicative mood (the normal everyday tenses).

Possibly, the plot reveals the mystery of the revenge.
Possivelmente, a trama revela o mistério da vingança.
They probably talked about the shocking pregnancy in the eighth episode.
Eles provavelmente falaram sobre a gravidez chocante no oitavo episódio.
The outcome of the first season is so surprising that probably nobody guesses it!
O desfecho da primeira temporada é tão surpreendente que provavelmente ninguém adivinha!

Contrasting with Talvez

Another common way to make a prediction is using talvez (maybe / perhaps). However, unlike the adverbs ending in -mente, talvez introduces a strong sense of doubt and always requires the subjunctive mood.

Maybe the soap opera has a second season!
Talvez a novela tenha uma segunda temporada!
Maybe the protagonist hides the mystery of the story.
Talvez o protagonista esconda o mistério da história.

Notice how talvez forces the verb into the subjunctive (esconda), whereas possivelmente keeps the standard indicative (esconde):

Possibly, the plot hides a secret in the last episode.
Possivelmente, a trama esconde um segredo no último episódio.
Since the pregnancy is the main mystery, maybe the husband does not know.
Como a gravidez é o mistério principal, talvez o marido não saiba.
