The other pois
You just met pois and pois é as agreement tags. Written and careful Portuguese uses pois a second way: as a connective meaning because / for, always after a comma:
| I am tired, for I went to bed late. | Estou cansado, pois deitei-me tarde. |
| everyday | more formal |
|---|---|
| Fico em casa porque chove. | Fico em casa, pois chove. |
The explicative pois never starts the sentence — it introduces the justification for what was just said, exactly where English might put "for".
