Taste and Smell
O sabor is the flavour; provar is to taste, to try food. On the nose side, o cheiro is the smell and cheirar the verb — cheirar a is to smell OF: a casa cheira a café.
| taste | |
|---|---|
| amargo | bitter |
| azedo | sour (limões!) |
| Coffee without sugar is bitter. | O café sem açúcar é amargo. |
The Pastelaria
A pastelaria is the pastry shop — half café, half bakery, the true Portuguese living room. There you order uma bica (the Lisbon word for an espresso) and whatever looks good behind the glass. A manteiga (butter), o iogurte (yoghurt) and o esparguete (spaghetti) round out the food basics.
| I usually have an espresso after lunch. | Costumo tomar uma bica depois do almoço. |
