Ir ter com alguém (ia a sair quando...)

Meeting someone: ir ter com

The everyday European way to say you will meet someone is ir ter com (or vir ter com, seen from the other end):

I'll meet you at the café at five.
Vou ter contigo ao café às cinco.

Literally "to go have with" — do not translate the pieces; the frame is the unit. The place takes a: vou ter contigo AO café.

Caught mid-action: ia a sair quando...

ir a + infinitive in the imperfect paints an action just begun, about to be interrupted:

I was just leaving the house when the phone rang.
Ia a sair de casa quando o telefone tocou.

Compare the family you know: estar para (about to), estar a (in progress), ficar a (settling into) — and now ir a (barely started, then...).
