Future indicative of regular verbs (-rei, -rás, -rá)

To talk about distant future events, scientific predictions, or firm plans, use the futuro do indicativo (future indicative).

Forming the Regular Future Tense

To conjugate regular verbs, simply keep the entire infinitive form and attach the future endings. These endings are exactly the same for all -ar, -er, and -ir verbs:

PronounEndingexplorar (to explore)descobrir (to discover)
eu-eiexplorareidescobrirei
tu-ásexplorarásdescobrirás
ele / ela / vocêexplorarádescobrirá
nós-emosexploraremosdescobriremos
eles / elas / vocês-ãoexplorarãodescobrirão

Notice the written accents on the tu, ele/ela/você, and eles/elas/vocês forms.

Here are some examples of the singular forms:

I will look at that star.
Eu olharei para aquela estrela.
Will you travel to the moon with the scientist?
Tu viajarás para a lua com o cientista?
The scientist will discover a new planet.
O cientista descobrirá um planeta novo.

And the plural forms:

We will explore space next year.
Nós exploraremos o espaço no próximo ano.
You will discover the truth in space.
Vocês descobrirão a verdade no espaço.

Predicting Change

You will frequently use the future tense to discuss long-term changes, such as environmental shifts. In this context, the verb ficar (which often means "to stay") is commonly used to mean "to become".

Will the planet become empty in the future?
O planeta ficará vazio no futuro?
The temperatures will increase and the climate will become different.
As temperaturas aumentarão e o clima ficará diferente.
