Two Spellings, One Rule
You just learned porque = because. The SAME word asks why — the spelling depends on where it stands.
Porquê — with the circumflex — is why standing ALONE or at the END of the sentence:
| Are you tired? Why? | Estás cansado? Porquê? |
| You are not drinking the wine? Why? | Não bebes o vinho? Porquê? |
Porque — no accent — opens a full why-question, and in Portugal it almost always brings é que along:
| Why do you study Portuguese? — Because my family lives in Lisbon. | Porque é que estudas português? — Porque a minha família mora em Lisboa. |
| Why are you not eating the fish? — Because I do not like fish. | Porque é que não comes o peixe? — Porque não gosto de peixe. |
| Why does the museum not open today? | Porque é que o museu não abre hoje? |
The Rule of Thumb
Nothing after it → porquê. Something after it → porque. And the answer to both is porque + a reason — question and answer often mirror each other word-for-word, as above.
