How does po mean "around" here? I thought it meant "after".
You have probably seen po used for time, like po południu (after noon). However, when you use po with a physical place in the Locative case, it describes motion "around", "all over", or "along" a surface. So po placu means they are moving all over or around the square.
Why is the verb biegają used here instead of biegną?
Polish has two different verbs for running. Biec (they run: biegną) is used for running in one specific direction, like running to catch a bus. Biegać (they run: biegają) is used for running around in multiple directions or as a general activity. Because the children are running all over the square (po placu), the multi-directional verb biegają is required.
Why does the word plac change to placu?
