How does po mean "around" here? I thought it meant "after".
You have probably seen po used for time, like po południu (after noon). However, when you use po with a physical place in the Locative case, it describes motion "around", "all over", or "along" a surface. So po placu means they are moving all over or around the square.
Why is the verb biegają used here instead of biegną?
Polish has two different verbs for running. Biec (they run: biegną) is used for running in one specific direction, like running to catch a bus. Biegać (they run: biegają) is used for running around in multiple directions or as a general activity. Because the children are running all over the square (po placu), the multi-directional verb biegają is required.
Why does the word plac change to placu?
The preposition po requires the Locative case. For many masculine nouns, the Locative ending is -e, but nouns ending in "soft" or "historically soft" consonants (like the c in plac) take the ending -u instead. That is why plac becomes placu.
Is dzieci the normal plural form of dziecko?
It is the plural form, but it is highly irregular. The singular is dziecko (child) and the plural is dzieci (children). It is a very common irregular noun that you just have to memorize, and as you can see here, it takes a normal plural verb form (biegają).
