Questions & Answers about Znamy prawdę.
Why use znamy here instead of a form of wiedzieć?
In Polish, there are two verbs for "to know". We use znać (here as znamy, meaning "we know") when we are familiar with a noun, like a person, place, or concept. Since "the truth" (prawda) is a noun, we must use znać. The other verb, wiedzieć, is used for knowing facts or information, usually followed by question words or the word "that".
Why is it prawdę instead of its dictionary form prawda?
The verb znać requires the Accusative case because the thing you know is the direct object of the sentence. For feminine nouns ending in -a like prawda, the ending changes to -ę in the Accusative case, which gives us prawdę.
Where is the word for "we" in this sentence?
You can include the word my (we) and say My znamy prawdę, but Polish usually drops subject pronouns. The -my ending on the verb znamy already makes it completely clear that "we" are the ones doing the action.
How do I pronounce the -ę at the end of prawdę?
When the nasal letter ę appears at the very end of a word in conversational Polish, it is usually pronounced just like a regular e. So prawdę sounds like "prav-deh". You do not need to force the nasal sound at the end of words.
