Why use potrafisz here instead of możesz or umiesz?
In Polish, the English word "can" translates to different verbs based on the context. Możesz (from móc) usually means you have permission or the physical opportunity to do something. Umiesz (from umieć) means you possess a learned skill. Potrafisz (from potrafić) is very similar to umieć and they are often used interchangeably for skills like swimming, but potrafisz emphasizes being capable of doing something or having the know-how to manage it.
Why is the verb pływać used here instead of płynąć?
Pływać is an indeterminate (general or multi-directional) verb of motion. You use it when talking about the general ability to swim, swimming as a hobby, or swimming around without a specific destination. You would use płynąć (the determinate counterpart) if you were talking about swimming in a specific direction at a specific time, like "I am swimming to the shore right now" (Płynę do brzegu).
Why isn't the question word czy at the beginning of this sentence?
While czy is the standard way to form yes/no questions in written or formal Polish, native speakers frequently drop it in casual, spoken language. When you drop czy, you just raise your intonation at the end of the sentence to show it is a question. Saying Czy potrafisz pływać? is also perfectly correct but sounds slightly more formal.
