Two Ways to Say "Two Men"
You know the Genitive strategy from lesson 96: dwóch panów czeka. For 2–4 with masculine-personal nouns Polish also has dedicated Nominative forms — and with them the verb is PLURAL:
| Genitive strategy | virile Nominative | |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | dwóch panów czeka | dwaj panowie czekają |
| 3 | trzech studentów mieszka | trzej studenci mieszkają |
| 4 | czterech braci pracuje | czterej bracia pracują |
| Two gentlemen are waiting in front of the house. | Dwaj panowie czekają przed domem. |
From Five Up: Always the -u Form
With virile nouns, 5+ has no alternate: pięciu, ośmiu, stu, dwustu + Genitive plural, singular verb — the pattern you know from lesson 269, now with the full range of numbers:
| Eight soldiers came back from the war. | Ośmiu żołnierzy wróciło z wojny. |
Ordinals Go Virile Too
Ordinal numerals take the virile plural in -i/-y with masculine-personal subjects: pierwsi goście, drudzy zawodnicy, ostatni being identical in both.
| The first guests have already arrived. | Pierwsi goście już przyszli. |
