Verbs taking the instrumental case

Verbs Governing the Instrumental Case

Many Polish verbs "govern" a specific case, requiring their object to take that case regardless of context. Verbs expressing strong emotional attitudes demand the Instrumental case instead of the Accusative.

To review, Instrumental noun endings are typically -em (or -iem) for masculine and neuter nouns, and for feminine nouns.

Disgust and Contempt

Verbs describing intense negative feelings, like gardzić (to despise) and brzydzić się (to be disgusted by), take the Instrumental case.

Since he lied, I despise his hypocrisy.
Ponieważ kłamał, gardzę jego hipokryzją.
Public opinion is disgusted by corruption in this country.
Opinia publiczna brzydzi się korupcją w tym kraju.
Since the authorities took a bribe, we are disgusted by corruption.
Ponieważ władza wzięła łapówkę, brzydzimy się korupcją.

Caring and Worrying

The reflexive verb przejmować się (to care about, to worry about) also governs the Instrumental case.

She could not be bothered by their indifference.
Nie mogła przejmować się ich obojętnością.
Because of the evidence, nobody cares about this bribe anymore.
Ze względu na dowody, nikt nie przejmuje się już tą łapówką.

Admiration and Pride

Strong positive attitudes trigger the Instrumental case as well, using verbs like zachwycać się (to admire) and szczycić się (to pride oneself on).

We are delighted with the attitude of this politician.
Zachwycamy się postawą tego polityka.
The director prided himself on the new project, but he took a bribe.
Dyrektor szczycił się nowym projektem, ale wziął łapówkę.
Since they did not take bribes, they prided themselves on this attitude.
Ponieważ nie brali łapówek, szczycili się tą postawą.
