Reversing states with od-
The prefix od- often functions like the English prefixes un- or de-, undoing an action or reversing a state.
For instance, you can use it to unlock (odblokować), unscrew (odkręcić), or untie (odwiązać) something:
| Try to unlock this door. | Spróbuj odblokować te drzwi. |
| Unscrew this screw and check what is there. | Odkręć tę śrubkę i sprawdź, co tam jest. |
| Sir, do you know how to untie this string? | Proszę pana, czy pan wie, jak odwiązać ten sznurek? |
Extracting and uncovering
You will also use od- for uncovering information, such as deciphering a code (odszyfrować) or reading out a hidden message (odczytać):
| We must decipher this password as soon as possible. | Musimy odszyfrować to hasło jak najszybciej. |
| Are you able to read out this message? | Czy jesteś w stanie odczytać tę wiadomość? |
If a clue is hidden out of sight, you might need to turn an object around (odwrócić) or move it aside (odsunąć):
| Turn this painting around and find a clue. | Odwróć ten obraz i znajdź wskazówkę. |
| You must move this desk aside to enter. | Musisz odsunąć to biurko, żeby wejść. |
Detaching and peeling
Finally, use od- when separating one thing from another, like peeling off tape (odkleić) or detaching a component (odczepić):
| Peel off this tape carefully. | Odklej tę taśmę ostrożnie. |
| We have to detach this cable from the computer. | Musimy odczepić ten kabel od komputera. |
(Note: *od- is also commonly used for reciprocating an action, such as odpisać for "to write back" or oddzwonić for "to call back".)*
