The Prefix "za-": Enclosing and Blocking
In Polish, the prefix za- frequently conveys the idea of enclosing, blocking, or covering up. When attached to verbs related to building or construction, it indicates enclosing a space or walling something off.

| Why did they wall up this small window? | Dlaczego zamurowali to małe okno? |
Obstructing and Barricading
It is also used to describe creating physical obstructions, such as barricading a door, fencing off a road, or obstructing a passage.
| Above all, we must obstruct this passage. | Przede wszystkim musimy zatarasować to przejście. |

Covering and Sealing
This prefix also applies to covering surfaces or sealing things shut, adding the sense of "closing off" an object.
| The thief tried to cover his face before he escaped from the bank. | Złodziej próbował zakryć twarz, zanim uciekł z banku. |
| You must seal this crack with tape before water floods the floor. | Musisz zakleić to pęknięcie taśmą, zanim woda zaleje podłogę. |
Blocking Paths and Views
A common verb in this category is zastawić, which means to block something by placing an object in the way (such as blocking a door with furniture or blocking another car on the street).
| Someone blocked my car on the street. | Ktoś zastawił mój samochód na ulicy. |
These verbs of blocking and covering are also frequently used to describe obstructing visibility (widoczność).
| The car blocked the passage and obstructed the visibility. | Samochód zastawił przejście i zakrył widoczność. |
