The prefix do- for addition
The aspectual prefix do- often marks adding to an existing quantity. For example, adding it to the verb for "to write" creates dopisać (to append):
| We must append this clause to the contract. | Musimy dopisać tę klauzulę do umowy. |
| It is important to me to add a new paragraph. | Zależy mi na tym, żeby dopisać nowy paragraf. |
It also applies to paying an additional amount (dopłacić):
| If the client signs the annex, he will have to pay extra. | Jeśli klient podpisze aneks, będzie musiał dopłacić. |
The prefix do- for completion
The prefix do- can also indicate that an action has been brought to its final conclusion. For instance, doczytać means to read something to the very end:
| This provision is long and unfortunately I didn't read it to the end. | Ten zapis jest długi i niestety go nie doczytałem. |
In legal drafting, finalizing exact details is crucial. Doprecyzować means to clarify or pin down precise terms:
| When will you clarify the conditions of the contractual penalty? | Kiedy doprecyzują państwo warunki kary umownej? |
Similarly, dopracować means to refine or work on a document until it is perfectly finished:
| It is important to the boss to refine this annex. | Szefowi zależy na tym, żeby dopracować ten aneks. |
