Saying there was none (nie było, nie będzie)

You have used nie ma + Genitive since A1: Nie ma kawy. In the past and future the same construction keeps the Genitive — and the verb FREEZES in the third-person singular:

present	nie ma kawy
past	nie było kawy
future	nie będzie kawy

People disappear into the Genitive too

Where English says he wasn't there, Polish negates the existence — the person goes to the Genitive and the verb stays było:

The boss was not in the office.Szefa nie było w biurze. — compare affirmative *Szef był w biurze.* I was not at home yesterday.Nie było mnie wczoraj w domu. — *I* wasn't home.

Whatever the number or gender — studentów nie było, koleżanki nie było — the verb does not budge from było / będzie.
