Arguments and Compromises
To talk about conflicts and resolutions, use nouns like kłótnia (argument), kompromis (compromise), and zgoda (agreement).
Use the preposition z (with) followed by the Instrumental case to express who the argument was with.
| It was a long argument with my new neighbor. | To była długa kłótnia z moim nowym sąsiadem. |
| After the argument, we finally have a compromise. | Po kłótni wreszcie mamy kompromis. |
Reciprocal Verbs with "się"
The reflexive pronoun się often indicates a mutual or reciprocal action—something people do to, or with, each other.
When you name the other person involved, pair the verb with z (with) + Instrumental.
Here is how this works with verbs for resolving conflicts, such as dogadać się (to reach an agreement) and pogodzić się (to reconcile):
| We must honestly reach an agreement with the new manager. | Musimy szczerze dogadać się z nowym kierownikiem. |
| I would like to honestly reconcile with my sister. | Chciałbym szczerze pogodzić się z moją siostrą. |
Relationships and Communication
This pattern applies to many verbs involving relationships and communication:
- zaprzyjaźnić się (to become friends)
- rozstawać się (to part ways / break up)
- widywać się (to see each other regularly)
- kontaktować się (to contact)
Pronunciation note: If the word following z starts with certain difficult consonant clusters (like swoim), the preposition changes to ze.
| My mother became friends with this new neighbor. | Moja matka zaprzyjaźniła się z tą nową sąsiadką. |
| She often breaks up with her boyfriend. | Ona często rozstaje się ze swoim chłopakiem. |
| What time do you see your doctor? | O której godzinie widujesz się ze swoim lekarzem? |
| I contact the Polish office every day. | Codziennie kontaktuję się z polskim biurem. |
