Past unfulfilled obligations
To talk about things you "should have" done but didn't, Polish uses a special past form of powinien.
Combine the conjugated form of powinien with the third-person past tense of być (był, była, byli, or były), followed by an infinitive. Both parts of the structure must match the subject's gender and number.

Because regrets usually focus on specific missed events, the infinitive is most often perfective.

Negation
To express what someone "shouldn't have" done, place nie before powinien.

Plural subjects distinguish between virile (groups with at least one male) and non-virile (groups with no males).
