Neither ... Nor (ani ... ani)
To say "neither... nor," use the correlative conjunction ani ... ani. Always place a comma before the second ani.
| neither / nor | ani |
Polish requires negative concord (double negation). Unlike English, the main verb must also be negated with nie. Remember that negating a direct object changes its case to Genitive.
| Today I have neither the strength nor the desire for a walk. | Dzisiaj nie mam ani siły, ani ochoty na spacer. |
| This candidate has neither knowledge nor experience. | Ten kandydat nie ma ani wiedzy, ani doświadczenia. |
You can use ani ... ani to link nouns, adjectives, or phrases. The rule remains the same: negate the main verb.
| We are neither at work nor at home. | My nie jesteśmy ani w pracy, ani w domu. |
| We eat neither rice nor pasta. | Nie jemy ani ryżu, ani makaronu. |
| This old plan is neither practical nor effective. | Ten stary plan nie jest ani praktyczny, ani skuteczny. |
| The new boss is neither nice nor effective. | Nowy szef nie jest ani sympatyczny, ani skuteczny. |
