Logical inference (skoro)

Drawing conclusions with "skoro"

To state a logical deduction based on an established fact, use the conjunction skoro (since / seeing as). A clause starting with skoro usually comes at the beginning of the sentence to present the evidence, followed by a comma and the conclusion.

Since we can rule this out, the conclusion is obvious.
Skoro możemy to wykluczyć, wniosek jest oczywisty.
Since you have proof, your conclusion is valid.
Skoro masz dowód, twój wniosek jest słuszny.
Since you are right, it is hard for me to disagree.
Skoro masz rację, trudno mi się nie zgodzić.

Evaluating arguments

Skoro is highly useful when evaluating an argument, solution, or assumption (przypuszczenie). You'll often see it paired with these key adjectives:

  • słuszny (right, valid, just)
  • sensowny (reasonable, making sense)
  • błędny (incorrect, flawed)
Since this is a valid argument, we cannot rule it out.
Skoro to słuszny argument, nie możemy go wykluczyć.
Since this solution is reasonable, we must check it.
Skoro to rozwiązanie jest sensowne, musimy je sprawdzić.
Since he started from an incorrect assumption, his conclusion is wrong.
Skoro zaczął od błędnego założenia, jego wniosek jest zły.

"Skoro" vs. "Jeśli"

While both can translate to "if" in conversation, they have distinct logical meanings:

  • Use skoro when a fact is already known or accepted ("since X is true...").
  • Use jeśli for purely hypothetical conditions ("in the event that X is true...").
If this assumption is incorrect, we must start from the beginning.
Jeśli to przypuszczenie jest błędne, musimy zacząć od początku.
Where is the logic here if your plan is not reasonable?
Gdzie tu logika, jeśli twój plan nie jest sensowny?
