Feeling cold: jest mi zimno

The state goes to the Dative

Where English says I am cold, Polish says it is cold TO ME — the person stands in the Dative, the state is a bare adverb, and the verb is jest:

In the past: Było mi zimno. In questions the jest often moves or drops: Zimno ci?

Wanting-feelings: chce mi się

The same Dative pattern with chcieć się covers urges: Chce mi się spać — I feel sleepy (literally: it wants itself to me to sleep). Nie chce mi się — I can't be bothered. You will hear both constantly.
