During (podczas, w trakcie)

Saying "During" in Polish

Polish offers two common prepositions to say "during": podczas and w trakcie (literally: in the process of).

Both mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably. Both require the following noun phrase to be in the genitive case.

Using podczas

Remember to apply your genitive case endings to the activity. For example, feminine nouns ending in -a usually change to -i or -y (joga becomes jogi, medytacja becomes medytacji), and neuter nouns ending in -e change to -a (ćwiczenie becomes ćwiczenia).

We are always calm during yoga.
My zawsze jesteśmy spokojni podczas jogi.
Nobody ever talks during meditation.
Nikt nigdy nie rozmawia podczas medytacji.

If you are adding a demonstrative pronoun like to (this), it must also take the genitive case (tego).

During this exercise, I focus on the breath.
Podczas tego ćwiczenia skupiam się na oddechu.

Using w trakcie

The phrase w trakcie works exactly the same way.

Notice how masculine inanimate nouns like oddech (breath) often take the -u ending in the genitive (oddechu).

During yoga, the instructor helps us.
W trakcie jogi instruktor nam pomaga.
The mind rests during the breath.
Umysł odpoczywa w trakcie oddechu.
During this position, the mind focuses.
W trakcie tej pozycji umysł się skupia.
